What each worktop costs
- Laminate: from about €72 to €134 for a 3 metre length, supply only. Fitted the same day.
- Solid oak: from about €615 for a 3.66 metre length, supply only. Oiled when it's fitted and every few months after.
- Quartz: €450 a metre for 20 mm entry quartz, €550 to €750 for 30 mm mid-range, €800 to €1,200 premium, all supplied and fitted. About €2,200 for a standard 6 metre kitchen.
- Granite: from about €2,500 fitted for a standard 6 metre kitchen.
How a stone worktop is fitted
The units go in first. Then a template is made, the stone is cut off site, and it's fitted a week or two later. You're without a worktop in between unless a temporary one goes on. The sink and hob cut-outs, upstands and drainer grooves are often priced separately, so ask.
Which to choose
- Laminate for a tight budget or a rental. Modern ones look far better than they used to.
- Oak for warmth, if you'll oil it.
- Quartz for a hard, non-porous top that needs nothing. The usual choice in a new kitchen.
- Granite for natural stone. Sealed now and then.
